Course Description. Alfred North Whitehead’s metaphysics is the most advanced and sophisticated version of process philosophy, an ontology that takes events rather than enduring substances as the basic units of reality.

Philosophers are familiar with his metaphysical theories about the primacy of temporal processes. In Modes of Learning, George Allan brings these two sides of Whitehead’s thought together for the first time in a book suitable for both those initially approaching Whitehead’s metaphysics and 4/5(1).

Metaphysics, branch of philosophy whose topics in antiquity and the Middle Ages were the first causes of things and the nature of being. Later, many other topics came to be included under the heading ‘metaphysics.’ The set of problems that now make up the subject matter of metaphysics is extremely diverse.

This book discusses the problems raised by Whitehead's metaphysics of creativity--metaphysics focused on dynamic becoming rather than on static being--and the proposed solutions to those problems.

Whitehead adds a new dimension to the issues of traditional metaphysics by taking into account the world view of our civilization and the results of. COVID Resources.

This is the argument made in Nobo's "Whitehead's Metaphysics of Extension and Solidarity." Nobo's book is in many ways a more technical and dense book to read in comparison to this book, but the critical analysis and attempt to make sense of what Whitehead was expressing goes much deeper in Nobo's book/5(4).

Process philosophy — also ontology of becoming, processism, or philosophy of organism — identifies metaphysical reality with opposition to the classical model of change as illusory (as argued by Parmenides) or accidental (as argued by Aristotle), process philosophy regards change as the cornerstone of reality—the cornerstone of being thought of as becoming.

George Allan Publication Date: March, Alfred North Whitehead is a major figure in the development of process philosophy because he proposes a metaphysical understanding of the nature of things that emphasizes their radical temporality.

Ross isolates four principles as having a fundamental role in whitehead's metaphysics: perspective, cosmology, experience, and mechanical analysis. He argues that many of Whitehead's difficulties can be eliminated by raising the principle of perspective to prominence and by revising the other central features of Whitehead's theory accordingly.Shows how Whitehead’s metaphysics developed from his reading of early modern philosophy At the beginning of his magnum opus, Process and Reality (), Whitehead lists a series of beliefs which he thinks are widely held by contemporary philosophers.

The.Let's read Whitehead's *Process and Reality* I think I found a little "back" door into the book, that is starting with the parts where he talks about other philosophers. this is how Peter S explained qualia in Whiteheads system (he's one of the most knowledgeable Whitehead scholars I can think of) but tbh eternal objects still confuse me.
